2026 Greater Boston College Move-In & Back-to-School Traffic Guide

Late August in Greater Boston has its own particular rhythm. Summer traffic starts fading, school buses return, thousands of college students arrive with cars full of boxes, and then September 1 brings one of the biggest rental turnover days of the year.

If you live, work, commute, schedule appointments, or show homes around Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Medford, or Arlington, knowing the major 2026 college move-in and public school start dates can help you plan around some very predictable congestion.

2026 Greater Boston College Move-In Dates

We are focusing on universities that are most likely to affect the Santana Team's core markets and the routes our clients and team travel regularly. Individual student arrival appointments can vary, so use these as planning dates and check the university's official information if your schedule depends on a specific day.

Boston University Move-In Starts the First Major Wave

Boston University brings one of the earliest large move-in periods. New undergraduates arrive August 24-25, followed by continuing students August 28-31. BU Transportation specifically warns employees to expect heavy traffic and increased parking demand campus-wide during move-in.

If your normal route uses Commonwealth Avenue, Kenmore Square, or the Green Line B Branch corridor, those dates are worth keeping in mind. The City of Boston also has temporary parking restrictions tied to student move-in activity in Allston-Brighton, Fenway, Roxbury, and Mission Hill. Cambridge Has Several Separate Move-In Waves

Cambridge does not get one college move-in day and then move on with its life. Harvard, MIT, and Lesley create several waves from late August through Labor Day weekend.

Harvard's largest first-year arrival is August 26, followed by sophomore arrivals August 27 and general upperclass move-in August 29. MIT welcomes first-year students August 29 and returning students September 4. Lesley adds another residential move-in on September 6.

That means Harvard Square, Porter Square, Massachusetts Avenue, and the MIT end of Mass Ave can feel different from one day to the next. Around MIT, the Mass Ave Bridge and nearby Cambridge riverfront routes are also worth watching when families are arriving by car.

Tufts Brings Move-In Traffic to Somerville and Medford

Tufts spreads its Medford/Somerville campus arrivals across multiple dates. Pre-orientation students arrive August 28, most new students arrive September 2, and returning students arrive through September 6.

The most direct activity is around College Avenue, Boston Avenue, and the streets immediately surrounding campus. Depending on your approach, trips feeding in from Route 16/Alewife Brook Parkway can also pick up some of that activity.

When Do Greater Boston Public Schools Start in 2026?

College move-ins are only half of the late-summer traffic shift. Public school openings bring school buses, student transportation, family drop-offs, and regular school-day commuting patterns back to the region within the same short window.

The Dates We'd Circle on the Calendar

August 28-31: The First Big Wave

BU's continuing students move in August 28-31. Tufts has pre-orientation arrivals August 28. Harvard's upperclass move-in builds through August 29. Somerville Public Schools reopen August 31.

If you regularly travel through Cambridge, Somerville, Medford, Allston, Kenmore, or the Commonwealth Avenue corridor, build in some extra time.

September 1-4: The Most Complicated Stretch

September 1 is the date to pay the most attention to. It is Greater Boston's enormous annual apartment turnover day, Cambridge Public Schools grades 1-12 start, and Boston has temporary parking restrictions in several neighborhoods because of student and residential move-in activity.

Then on September 2, Arlington and Medford public schools open while most new Tufts students arrive. Cambridge kindergarten and preschool students start September 3. MIT returning students move in September 4, which is also the start of Northeastern's main Boston campus move-in weekend.

September 5-8: One More Wave

Tufts and Lesley residential arrivals continue through September 6, Northeastern's Boston campus move-in runs through Labor Day on September 7, and Boston Public Schools grades 1-12 return September 8.

By then, the lighter summer commuting pattern is officially over.

What About Arlington?

Arlington gets a relative break from college move-in traffic. There is no major university move-in concentrated within town, so Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington and Route 2 are not campus move-in zones in the same way that Harvard Square, the Tufts area, or Commonwealth Avenue are.

That does not mean Route 2 or the east end of Mass Ave will be empty. Eastbound traffic still feeds toward Alewife and Cambridge, where Harvard, MIT, and Lesley arrivals can create spillover. But Arlington's more noticeable back-to-school shift should come when Arlington Public Schools reopen September 2.

Local gem: For trips that work by bike or transit, the Minuteman Bikeway runs through Arlington to Alewife Station and can be a useful alternative to sitting in late-summer traffic wondering why everyone in Massachusetts appears to own the same collection of moving bins.

A Few Ways to Make Back-to-School Week Easier

• Build extra time into trips from August 28 through September 8, especially around university campuses and major school-day commute periods.
• Check parking restrictions before driving into Boston. Temporary student move-in restrictions are already scheduled in Allston-Brighton, Fenway, Roxbury, and Mission Hill.
• Do not assume your summer commute will still be your September commute. School buses, drop-offs, campus arrivals, and normal work traffic all return within a very short period.
• Look at the route, not just the destination. A showing or appointment may be nowhere near a campus but still require crossing Harvard Square, the Mass Ave Bridge, College Avenue, or Commonwealth Avenue.
• Verify exact dates before making time-sensitive plans. University arrival assignments, school calendars, parking rules, and transportation conditions can change.
