Surviving September 1st in Boston: Move-In Day and How Not to Get “Storrowed”
.png)
September 1 is Boston’s unofficial moving day. With tens of thousands of students and renters switching apartments, the city fills with moving trucks, mattresses, and free curbside furniture. It is chaotic and also very Boston.
What does “getting storrowed” mean?
“Storrowed” is when a truck driver takes a rental onto Storrow Drive, Memorial Drive, or Soldiers Field Road and hits a low overpass. The result is a shredded roof, blocked traffic, and an instant viral moment. Do not be that person.
Roads to avoid for trucks
- Storrow Drive in Boston
- Memorial Drive in Cambridge
- Soldiers Field Road in Boston
These parkways are marked with bright “Cars Only” signs and low clearance warnings. Trucks and tall vans do not belong there.
How to avoid getting storrowed
- Use truck-safe routing: Turn on restrictions in your maps app and sanity-check your route before you drive.
- Know your vehicle height: Most rental trucks exceed those bridge clearances. If you are in a 10–15 foot truck, assume the answer is no.
- Obey the signs: If you see Cars Only or Low Clearance, get off the ramp before it is too late.
- Downsize if possible: Two trips in a smaller van can be cheaper than one encounter with a low bridge and a security deposit.
- Bookmark official rules: Check MassDOT truck restrictions for a full list.
Move-in day survival tips
- Parking permits: Many streets require a temporary moving permit. Apply early with the City of Boston moving permit system.
- Timing: Early morning is your friend. Avoid peak hours around Allston, Brighton, Fenway, and Mission Hill.
- Elevators and stairs: Reserve elevator time if your building allows it. For walk-ups, bring extra hands and a shoulder dolly.
- Allston Christmas etiquette: If you grab curbside freebies, check for damage and pests before bringing items inside.
- Plan your unload: Stage boxes by room and label on multiple sides so you are not playing mystery box at midnight.
