Lifestyle & CommunityThe Top 5 Greater Boston Neighborhoods for Dog Parents (2025 Edition)
Moving with a dog means more than just finding the right home. It’s about finding the right community. The Greater Boston area is packed with dog-friendly neighborhoods where you and your pup can enjoy parks, trails, groomers, and trusted vets close by. As a dog parent myself (my pup Peanut loves exploring East Arlington), I’ve rounded up five neighborhoods that stand out for dogs and their humans in 2025.
1. Somerville – Union Square
Union Square is one of Somerville’s most vibrant spots, full of patios, parks, and plenty of dog-loving neighbors. Grab a coffee, hop on the Community Path, and you’re never far from green space.
- Off-Leash Dog Parks: Nunziato Field Dog Park, Ed Leathers Park, and Lincoln Park.
- Vets: Huron Veterinary Hospital, Tandem Veterinary Clinic - Somerville
- Groomers: The Pet Spa nearby, Laundromutt in West Cambridge with DIY dog baths and grooming
- Licensing: Somerville dog licensing and rules
2. Cambridge – Kendall & Central Square
Kendall and Central Squares are bustling and walkable, with easy access to the Charles River and pocket parks throughout.
- Dog parks: Pacific Street Dog Park (off-leash), Greene Rose Heritage Park (off-leash 6 to 9 a.m.), Fort Washington Park (shared use), Binney Street Park (dog run). Full list in the Cambridge Parks Guide PDF and Interactive Parks Map
- Vets: Huron Veterinary Hospital, Tandem Veterinary Clinic - Somerville
- Groomers: Furry Styles Dog Grooming, Splash and Dash Groomerie (in Assembly Square)
- Licensing: Cambridge dog license
3. Jamaica Plain
JP offers leafy streets and some of Boston’s best outdoor escapes. The Arboretum is perfect for long, scenic leash walks, while Jamaica Pond is a favorite for quick loops.
- Parks: Arnold Arboretum (dogs on leash), Jamaica Pond (dogs on leash). While there are no dedicated off-leash dog parks in JP, Brookline’s Green Dog Program next door offers off-leash hours ($150/dog annually for non-residents). Nearby parks in the program include Lars Anderson Park and Boylston St Playground.
- Vets: Jamaica Plain Animal Clinic, MSPCA Angell
- Groomers: Brookline Grooming and Pet Supplies, The Continental by The Doggy Port
- Licensing: Boston dog license
4. Brookline – Coolidge Corner
Coolidge Corner has a friendly, village feel and is backed by Brookline’s Green Dog Program, which allows residents off-leash hours at designated parks.
- Off-Leash Dog Parks: Coolidge Playground, Corey Hill Park, Griggs Park, and Amory Park. Registration required through the Green Dog Program ($75/dog annually for residents).
- Vets: Boston Veterinary Clinic – Brookline, Small Door Veterinary – Brookline
- Groomers: Brookline Dog Grooming, The Daily Stroll Grooming Salon
- Licensing: Brookline dog licenses
5. Arlington – East Arlington
I used to live in East Arlington with my dog, Peanut. Morning loops on the Minuteman Bikeway and afternoon play at Thorndike were part of our routine. Arlington also offers morning off-leash hours at select parks across town, making it easy to let pups burn energy before the day begins.
- Dog parks: For all-day off-leash play, head to Thorndike Field Dog Park. Many parks also allow off-leash hours from 6–9 a.m., including Menotomy Rocks Park and Spy Pond Park. The Minuteman Commuter Bikeway is always a great leash-walk. Townwide rules and off-leash windows are outlined in this pamphlet.
- Vets: Arlington Animal Clinic, Sleepy Dog Veterinary
- Groomers: The Clip Joint (where I take Peanut), Laundromutt nearby in Cambridge
- Licensing: Arlington dog license and rules
