Glenwood, Medford: A Quiet Hidden Gem Just Outside the Spotlight

If you asked me to describe my neighborhood in one sentence, I’d say it feels like Somerville did 20 years ago, before it became extra crowded and expensive. I’m usually hesitant to talk it up too much, because its appeal is how quietly it works.

Glenwood is a small residential pocket of Medford, tucked between Medford Square and Wellington and stretching up toward the Fellsway (with our own neighborhood Target!). It often gets overlooked, which I think is part of why people who live here tend to stay. The neighborhood feels established and residential, with some beautiful older homes on larger lots, but you are still close to Boston, transit, and the parts of Medford where people spend their free time.

Day-to-Day Feel

The Glenwood area feels like a real neighborhood. Streets are mostly residential, and homes are generally larger than what you find closer to the city. There is a noticeable sense that people who live here tend to stay long-term.

It is quieter than Somerville or Cambridge, but not isolated. You see people walking dogs (so many dogs), heading to nearby parks, or driving a few minutes toward Medford Square for dinner or a show. It feels lived-in and steady.

Location and Access

One of Glenwood’s biggest strengths is its location. The neighborhood sits close to I-93, which makes commuting north or south straightforward. Wellington Station is about a mile away, which is walkable if you enjoy a longer summer evening stroll, or an easy bike or short drive for most people.

If you commute via the Orange Line, Wellington gets bonus points for Pizzeria Regina, LongCross, and Yokii Sushi for an easy dinner on the way home.

That access to transit and highways, without being directly on top of them, is part of what makes Glenwood work day to day.

Parks and Local Places I Recommend

Glenwood has great access to parks and open space, which adds to its residential feel. The number of parks in the area was one of the first things I noticed after moving here. Bonus points for the dog park off Riverside Ave.

I love not being surrounded by dense development, and getting outside is easy. In the mood for tennis? Check out the courts at Morrison Park.

For restaurants, bars, and entertainment, I usually head toward Medford Square. These are places I recommend because I’ve spent time there myself.

They are close enough to be part of everyday life, without Glenwood itself feeling busy or commercial. There are also big plans for development in Medford Square, which should bring even more great places to visit.

How Pricing Compares

Rather than describing Glenwood based on feel alone, it helps to look at how homes here have actually sold.

Looking at 3-bedroom homes sold in 2025, Glenwood and the rest of Medford showed some consistent differences.

2025 Averages: 3-Bedroom Homes* Glenwood Rest of Medford
Number of sales 13 144
Average sale price $811,792 $878,574
Avg. price per sq ft $458 $504
Avg. lot size (SF only) 6,710 sq ft 5,816 sq ft

The differences show up in pricing and lot size.

Glenwood and West Medford

Buyers often compare Glenwood to West Medford. While the neighborhoods feel different, they share similar access to highways, transit, and amenities.

In practice, comparable homes in West Medford tend to sell at higher price points. In Glenwood, buyers are often able to find larger homes and larger lots, while still staying close to the city.

Who Glenwood Works For

  • Want to be close to Boston without paying a premium just for the address
  • Care about space, lot size, and how a home lives day to day
  • Prefer a quieter, residential setting
  • Are looking to get more for their money, not just spend less

Final Thoughts

Glenwood is one of those neighborhoods that makes sense once you walk it. It offers space, location, and a quieter day-to-day feel that is getting harder to find this close to Boston.

If you’re thinking about Glenwood or comparing neighborhoods across Medford, I’m always happy to talk through what actually fits your priorities and how different areas live day to day.
